I recently got the program information to start a BlockWatch program on our street. In case you haven’t heard of BlockWatch, or aren’t familiar with the program, it’s described by the RCMP as follows:
Block Watch is a program where neighbours watch out for neighbours. It aims to get citizens involved in discouraging and preventing crime at the local level. The ultimate success of Block Watch depends largely on a commitment to cooperate between area residents and the police — and more importantly, between residents themselves.
The BlockWatch Society also provides community grants to hold an annual meeting (summer BBQ or other event) to build and foster community and safety. Many of our NQSS neighbourhoods currently have successful and active BlockWatch programs set up. However in many of the newer areas there is no formal program. You can contact our local Crime Prevention Officer, Colleen Kerr, to find out whether your block currently has an active program, how to get involved, and what your responsibilities would be.
I’ve volunteered to be a Block Captain for 58A avenue and I will need a co-captain! Please check out the BlockWatch Society to learn more about BlockWatch and let me know if you want to become involved.
The next training session takes place September 30th and to be able to participate we need paperwork in to the RCMP for early September. So please let me know if you are interested in participating with the 58A Avenue BlockWatch program! If you’re in a surrounding area it would be a fun evening if we all took the training together, so find out what’s happening in your area by e-mailing Colleen Kerr or phoning her at Tel: 604-502-6560.
–Edited February, 2012: Our new Crime Prevention Coordinator is Leeanne Kelly and you can reach her at the same number, 604-502-6560, or by e-mail.

Thanks for posting this information Chris. I have been planning to post an update and get the Blockwatch info out there again as we (HOPEFULLY) head into the sunny season (and open windows).
