I would like to update residents within the Panorama Neighbourhood Association of the YMCA’s work within our community and with our youth.

The YMCA is a charitable association dedicated to the development of people in spirit, mind and body as well as the improvement of local, national and international communities.

Our call to action, that, in human history, this is the first generation of children and youth who will inherit a lower life expectancy than their parents. We see a number of issues at the root of this problem.

VULNERABLE FAMILIES—VULNERABLE CHILDREN

- In BC, 30% of children entering kindergarten are developmentally vulnerable—an issue affecting all dimensions of the social economic scale. The high cost of living, longer work hours and the absence of affordable, high quality child care pose significant challenges for parents trying to raise healthy families.

UNHEALTHY LIFESTYLES

- The health of BC citizens is in decline. 42% of adults and 26% of children in BC are overweight or obese. Too many people in too many communities are inactive—especially the marginalized.

ISOLATION

- Approximately 50% of people in the Lower Mainland do not feel a strong sense of belonging in the community. Isolation, disconnection, and lack of community connections prevent people from accessing services that could help break this cycle.

The Community We Want: We need to act now before our situation gets worse. We envision strong, healthy communities where:

• All children and youth are happier and have a higher healthy life expectancy than their parents.

• People know their neighbours, respect diversity and social inclusion, and thrive on a sense of belonging.

• We share a sense of social responsibility within our community by working together.

• Families thrive and reach their full potential.

• People experience better health in spirit, mind and body.

For 125 years we’ve cared for kids, shaped leaders for tomorrow, supported peoples’ pursuit of healthy lifestyles, and helped generations of people come together to strengthen community.

Our Impact: How we will achieve our mission? The YMCA is committed to strengthening the foundations of community by nurturing the potential of children, teens and young adults; promoting healthy lifestyles; fostering social responsibility; and delivering lasting personal and social change.

Over the next few months you will begin to see a new YMCA emerge in your community. One more committed to families, activity, and social responsibility for the whole family and community.

Friday night we hosted over 50 youth 11-15 for our Friday Youth Night. We have always and will continue to lead the youth of the community to be best of our abilities, using techniques that engage and empower them to make positive choices and become the leaders of tomorrow.

Over the past number of weeks there has been vandalism and theft in our community. Tonight we brought this to the youth’s attention with the help of auxiliary RCMP officers. We let them know that while we do not necessarily believe any of them are involved, some of them may have made poor choices in the past. We let them know that it is easy to point the finger at them, and that simple actions they take can paint them and this program in a positive or negative light . We advised them of our expectations of them while participating in Youth Night, and our expectations of them while they are in the community. Topics included letting parents know of their whereabouts, respecting noise levels and private property, and each making the choice to do the right thing.

We let them know that in the coming weeks we will be asking them to engage with us on solutions to keep our neighbourhood safe. Their involvement is paramount to this end.

As a resident of the community and an employee of the YMCA I invite you to engage with me if you have any suggestions, comments or concerns.

More to come.

Sincerely,

David Woollven

General Manager – Tong Louie Family YMCA
